Homemade Hair Masks for Stronger, Shinier Hair

Soften thick, dry hair

Coconut oil works best to soften and tame thick dry hair. The natural substance can be easily absorbed into the hair due to its fatty acids, it contains a UV filter to stop sun damage, and protect hair from drying out with its moisturizing properties. Melt the coconut oil by rubbing a small amount in between your hands and using a comb to evenly coat the scalps and hair. When rubbed directly on the scalp, coconut oil has an antimicrobial effect to help unclog pores and promote hair growth. Be aware to use the proper amount of coconut oil as it is heavy; a teaspoon for fine hair and for a tablespoon for thick hair.

Treat damaged hair

Use milk and honey to treat hair damage. Honey contains keratin to strengthen the hair and prevent breakage. It also encourages cell regeneration for a healthier scalp and its anti-inflammatory properties can calm irritation. For milk, it is full of proteins, amino acids, vitamin B12, iron, and zinc. When combining the two, they can help soften the hair and support its structure. As milk has a thin and liquid consistency, put one cup of milk and one tablespoon of honey into a spray bottle and mist it onto the hair. Use it in place of conditioner, leave it in for 10 to 20 minutes after shampooing, then rinse out with warm water for shiny and smooth hair.

Combat frizz hair

When it comes to combating frizz hair, yogurt has the best results. The lactic acid in yogurt hydrates the hair, moisturizes damage and prevents frizziness. When you rinse out the yogurt, it also helps to clear away dead skin cells that build up on your scalp. Mix one cup of yogurt with a tablespoon of olive oil, apply the mixture to the hair for 10 minutes and rinse with warm water. This mask can add more shine and sleekness to the strands.

Remove build-up on the scalp

If your hair routine consists of loads of hairspray and other styling products, you are likely experiencing buildup on the scalp. Eggs and lemon work together can be better than a clarifying shampoo. Egg whites are great for oily hair and scalp health, as their high in protein and vitamins can remove build-up. Lemon can balance the pH of the scalp and reduce hair loss. It can also add shine and help get the smell of egg off. Mix one egg white and the juice of one lemon, then apply to clean, dry hair and scalp; leave on for one hour and rinse out.
